AAA Membership

Members are recognized by employers (who are usually AAA members, themselves) as motivated and well informed. The AAA is dedicated to you, the avalanche professionals and members.

The AAA no longer has biannual application deadlines!  All applications, Pro and Affiliate, will be reviewed every two months in conjunction with the AAA’s new bimonthly Governing Board meetings.

To best determine which level of membership you should apply for, please review the general descriptions below and reference the AAA application guidelines for further details on Professional qualifications prior to applying.

The American Avalanche Association is dedicated to providing you with information on the latest advances in avalanche research, forecasting, hazard reduction techniques and other topics of concern to the professional such as avalanche incidents, rescue dogs, beacons, guidelines, litigation and education.

There are four options to participate in the American Avalanche Association:

PROFESSIONAL MEMBERSHIP

Open to persons active in avalanche science and practice, and qualified through education and experience. A minimum of four full-seasons (20 days/season) of active avalanche work is required to qualify for professional membership.

MEMBER AFFILIATE

Open to persons qualified through education and interest but with less experience and/ or education than required for Professional Membership. A minimum of two years of fundamental background through avalanche education and ongoing involvement in avalanche related activities is required. Member Affiliates are typically entry-level professional patrollers or assistant guides, volunteer patrollers in avalanche-prone areas, law enforcement SAR specialists, and agency administrators.

LIFE MEMBER

Open to anyone with an interest in promoting the American Avalanche Association mission objectives. Applicants should apply as Professional or Member Affiliates and meet the requirements for the relevant category.

AAA SUPPORTER

Open to anyone wishing to support the AAA and receive The Avalanche Review. No specific experience or resume is required.  AAA Supporters are typically engaged recreationists, snow and avalanche enthusiasts, and friends and family who want to be connected to the latest developments and news in the industry.

YOUR AFFILIATION WITH THE AAA CREATES OPPORTUNITY

PROVIDES AVALANCHE INDUSTRY CONTACTS

With only a very few exceptions, AAA membership includes every Professional Ski Patrol Director, Snow Safety Director, Avalanche Forecaster and Avalanche Consultant in the U.S. Our membership also includes many U.S. avalanche control workers, ski resort and public-land managers, graduate students and foreign avalanche professionals. Members are invited to attend annual General Membership and Board Meetings. Professional members receive a printed or electronic Membership Roster.

SUBSCRIPTION TO THE AVALANCHE REVIEW

Timely and informative articles on avalanche awareness, forecasting techniques, hazards evaluation, control techniques, educational opportunities, news of the AAA, avalanche professionals and the world avalanche industry.

COLLECTIVE AWARENESS, CONCERN, AND VOICE WITH INDUSTRY ISSUES

Standards, legislation, and research opportunities affecting avalanche professionals are monitored and influenced. Develop and provide US snow, weather and avalanche guidelines (SWAG).

EDUCATION AND SCHOLARSHIP

The AAA develops avalanche course guidelines, provides professional development opportunities like avalanche educator seminars and the AAA Avalanche Explosives Workshop. We maintain a list of academies where the study of snow avalanche technology is available.

AAA provides support to the International Snow Science Workshop (ISSW), which is held every 2 years. ISSW provides a venue for showcasing recent research and practical developments in the avalanche world. It is also an excellent networking opportunity.

How To Apply

Already a Member and Want to Upgrade?

  • Contact the AAA at aaa@avalanche.org to initiate this process.

New Members:

  • Read the application guidelines before you begin.
  • Complete the online application process, including:
    • Provide your contact information (email, phone, and mailing address),
    • Provide thorough details of your avalanche training and experience that qualifies your for the membership level to which you are applying (including avalanche employment history, avalanche courses take and/or taught, avalanche research or publications, and professional references), and
    • Pay your first year’s membership dues (payments via credit card processed through PayPal).
  • Your completed application will be reviewed prior to the next AAA Board meeting by the AAA Membership Committee.  A committee member will contact you if they have questions about your experience or need additional information.
  • You will receive an official email about your membership status following the Board meeting at which your application is considered. Turn around times vary from 1-3 months depending on when you submit your application and when the next Board meeting occurs.
