Recreational Avalanche Education

What Is Recreational Avalanche Education?

Recreational avalanche education is designed for anyone who travels in avalanche terrain for fun or aspires to work in the avalanche industry: backcountry skiers, snowboarders, snowmobilers, hikers, and climbers. These courses teach you to recognize avalanche hazards, identify avalanche terrain, make informed decisions, and respond effectively in emergencies.

A3 sets the national standards for recreational avalanche courses, ensuring consistent, high-quality education no matter where you take your training. We don't teach courses ourselves; we approve the instructors and programs that deliver training you can trust.

Why A3-Recognized Recreational Training Matters

Employers recognize A3 standards. Many outdoor industry jobs, guide services, and ski areas require or prefer A3-recognized training because they know it meets professional standards.

Your life depends on quality education. Non-recognized courses may skip critical content or use unqualified instructors. A3-recognized training ensures you get complete, current, science-based education.

Consistent progression anywhere. A3 standards ensure seamless advancement regardless of location or provider.
