What Is Professional Avalanche Education?

Professional avalanche education is designed for those who work in avalanche terrain: ski patrollers, mountain guides, avalanche forecasters, highway departments, search and rescue teams, and other snow safety professionals. These courses provide advanced training in operational decision-making, risk assessment, and professional standards that employers recognize and require.

A3 sets the national standards for professional avalanche training, ensuring graduates meet industry requirements for competency and safety. We work directly with industry stakeholders to maintain curriculum that reflects real-world operational needs.

Why Professional A3-Certification Matters

Employers require A3 certification. Major ski areas, guide services, DOT programs, and search and rescue organizations specify A3 professional certification in job requirements because they trust our standards.

Professional Course Progression

Pro 1

Prerequisites: A3-recognized Recreational Level 1, Avalanche Rescue, minimum one winter season (20+ days) of relevant experience, and at least one full season between Recreational Level 1 and Pro 1

Foundation course for avalanche professionals. Covers operational decision-making, advanced hazard evaluation, professional documentation, and industry standards. Requires 70% proficiency across all evaluation categories.

Important: Students must demonstrate solid Recreational-level skills before entering Pro 1. Insufficient preparation leads to course failure and delays professional development.

Pro Rescue

Prerequisites: A3-recognized Recreational Level 1, Avalanche Rescue, BLS-CPR certificate

Professional level training designed for current and aspiring avalanche workers preparing students to be a contributing member on an avalanche incident response, capable of leading a strike team/task force in the field. Course focuses on the individual technical skills to solve simple to complex multiple burials of subjects with and without a transceiver through the search, excavation and extraction phases.

Pro 2

Prerequisites: Pro 1 certificate, minimum two full winter seasons of operational avalanche experience, verified work history, and examples of professional documentation (effective through 2026/27 season)

Advanced course focusing on complex decision-making, program management, mentoring skills, and professional leadership. Designed for senior professionals and supervisors.

Note: Pro 2 Proficiencies and Guidelines, v5 2026 go into effect for the 2027/28 winter season. UPDATED prerequisites: Pro 1 certificate, a minimum of 40 days of operational avalanche experience over two winter seasons following completion of the Pro 1, Letter of recommendation from a supervisor verifying work experience. The Letter of Recommendation must include verifying the completion of the Pro 2 Development Guide.

Pro Rescue certificate will be a required prerequisite for the Pro 2 starting 2029/30 season.

Pro AvSAR

Prerequisites: Pro Rescue certificate, current BLS-CPR, ICS 100 and 200

Advanced professional training to develop team leaders capable of initiating, managing and assisting in an organized avalanche incident response.

Transitioning from Recreational to Professional

Strong recreational foundation required. Professional training demands solid recreational skills as a starting point. Students who rush into Pro 1 without adequate recreational experience typically struggle or fail.

Recommended pathway:

  • Recreational Level 1 + Rescue + significant field experience → Pro 1

  • Recreational Level 2 experience: Helpful for decision-making skills and confidence

  • Work experience: Minimum operational experience required between course levels

  • Timeline: Most successful Pro 1 students have 2-3 seasons of serious recreational experience

Prior Learning Assessment (PLA)

Have avalanche training from outside the A3 system? You may qualify for course equivalency through our Prior Learning Assessment process.

Common equivalencies recognized:

  • CAA Level 1/Level 2 courses

  • Previous U.S. Level 2/Level 3 training (pre-2017)

  • International avalanche certifications

  • Relevant military or specialized training

PLA applications are reviewed by individual Pro Course Providers. Submit detailed documentation of your training, work experience, and professional references directly to your chosen provider.
